Elmira, N.Y. (WETM) — After being denied a grant to help get the Elmira Animal Shelter up to code, the city council will vote to hire a professional grant writer to try to get the money needed.

The New York State Animal Protection Federation secured $10 million to allow animal shelters to apply to the NYS Companion Animal Capital Fund (CACF) grant. The city plans to apply for the grant using an outside company.

Elmira City Manager, Michael Collins, says the city originally applied for the maximum amount of money for the grant, which was $500,000, and will look to apply for the highest amount again.

"Depending on how much the city is awarded then we would be able to go forward on either current upgrade to the shelter, or a new build," Collins said.
