ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)---Congressman Nick Langworthy visited Elmira City Hall to speak about the federal government shutdown.

The shutdown began on Wednesday, Oct. 1, after Congress failed to pass a funding agreement before the deadline.

" I don't believe in shutdowns. I think we ought to take legislative measures to not allow this to happen because you pay too much in taxes to run this government for it not to be there and be responsive to you when you need it," said Langworthy.

Langworthy says Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is partly to blame for the shutdown.

"He telegraphed this. He orchestrated this, and he withheld the appropriate votes to get us into this," said Langworthy.
