Construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is on track for completion this fall, though officials declined to say whether the 1.5-mile structure connecting Detroit to Ontario will actually open to traffic by the end of the calendar year.

Heather Grondin, chief relations officer of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, would not offer a specific opening date or commit to a timetable when reached by The Detroit News on Thursday. She said construction is about 98% done and on track for completion in fall 2025.

Remaining work includes installation of the electrical, fire suppression and drainage systems, and barriers and fencing for the multiuse path on the bridge, she said in an email.
