Manchester/London: Police have revealed one of the victims killed during an attack on a Manchester synagogue on Thursday was accidentally shot by an officer. A second victim – also thought to have been shot by police – remains in hospital.

In a lengthy statement posted on social media, Greater Manchester Police said the force believed the suspect, Jihad al-Shamie, was not in possession of a firearm when he allegedly launched a terrorist attack on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

“And the only shots fired were from GMP’s authorised firearms officers as they worked to prevent the offender from entering the synagogue and causing further harm to our Jewish community,” the statement by Sir Stephen Watson reads.
