Heather Bates was in the bathroom of her Fairview home when she had the urge to check on her 5-year-old daughter. Her room looked in place, but she didn’t hear her feet.

Bates looked down the hall, saw the front door was open and ran outside on the morning of Sept. 23, she said. She hurried barefoot down the driveway but had a hunch to check the nearby Fairview Lake for her daughter, Aradia Harper Sadler.

Bates saw the girl’s pants by the water and immediately began screaming, yelling for help and for someone to call 911, she said. Bates, who goes by Dahlia, dove into the lake and followed the current, passing her daughter to another family member who carried her to shore and began CPR.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Gresham Fire personnel responded around 11:30 a.m.
