ALBANY, New York (WWNY) - If you are shopping for a child car seat online and find a deal, make sure it meets safety standards.

New York state is telling parents to beware of the rising number of counterfeit car seats, which may not be tested properly or have inadequate safety features and poor construction.

Red flags to look for include missing labels that provide safety information specific to the seat.

Appropriate labels will have a model number, what company made it, and when it was made.

Another red flag is a missing manual or registration card. The state says an authentic car seat must come with a user manual and detailed instructions on how to install it.
