NEW ORLEANS — Friends and co-workers are remembering Carl Morgan as a gentle giant, a proud father, and a creative force in the kitchen — days after he was killed in a daylight carjacking outside a Canal Street daycare.

Police say 24-year-old Raymond Wells tried to carjack him, then fled in the stolen car before being found with a gunshot wound to the head. Wells remains under guard at University Hospital and faces a first-degree murder charge if he recovers.

At Brennan’s, where Morgan worked for years, the staff is devastated. General Manager Christian Pendleton said the news spread quickly through the restaurant family.
