WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Mourning over the plane crash involving the Wichita State football team extended well beyond the program’s inner circle.
And it continues 55 years later.
Among those immediately affected were the members of Utah State’s football team. The Aggies were scheduled to play WSU on Oct. 3, 1970, but the game never happened.
One of two WSU planes on the way to Logan, Utah, crashed in the Rocky Mountains, killing 31 people. That included 14 players, 14 boosters, coaches and administrators and three crew members.
“I remember -- it was very vivid when we heard the bad news,” said Ty Couey, who played defensive back at Utah State in 1970 and 1971. “It was guys I had played against the year before.
