AKRON, Ohio — The family of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker says they are devastated after a Summit County grand jury declined to indict the Akron police officer who fatally shot him last November.

“This is no justice out here, for police to murder my grandson like that and nothing get done about it. I’m hurt, man,” Tucker’s grandfather, Gary Garen, said. “I haven’t been the same since they killed him.”

City leaders released a joint statement Thursday offering condolences while standing by the independent investigation. “There will undoubtedly be many reactions to today’s news,” the statement read. “For those who wish to speak out – your speech and advocacy are constitutionally protected, and the city of Akron will safeguard those rights.
