MARSHALL, Texas -- The city's rabies control authority has confirmed a positive rabies case within the city.

A bat was found on the ground Monday in the 200 block of S. Washington Avenue. An animal control officer humanely euthanized the bat and submitted it for testing.

The state health department confirmed on Thursday the bat tested positive for rabies.

The area where it was found is being monitored to see if any additional animals are affected.

“We don’t believe anyone has been exposed, but we are taking this public health issue seriously. Public education is the key because rabies is fatal if left untreated, and it is 100 percent treatable," said Justin Serna, LRCA and director of the Marshall Pet Adoption Center.
