HILLSBORO Ore. (KPTV) - The Oregon medical examiner has identified the human remains found in the Tualatin River near Hillsboro in August, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday.

According to officials, DNA confirmed two severed body parts found in the river belonged to 34-year-old Ezequiel Avila-Ruiz, an unhoused man who was known to live near Rood Bridge Park.

On Aug. 8, a kayaker told FOX 12 that he called 911 to report finding what he believed was a severed leg in the water near the Rood Bridge Park boat launch. He also showed the FOX 12 crew a video he took of the scene.

The next day, searchers found a second body part about a mile downriver, according to WCSO. DNA from Avila-Ruiz’s family was used to confirm his identity.
