Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg has said the terror attack on a synagogue in the UK should serve as "another red alert" for Australia's leaders.

The violent attack unfolded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall in north Manchester just after 9.30am on Thursday.

Greater Manchester Police said the male suspect, who was wearing what appeared to be a vest with an explosive device, was shot dead after officers rushed to the scene.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, Jihad Al-Shamie, had reportedly driven a car into pedestrians and stabbed a security guard in the attack.

Two men were killed while another three were hospitalised.
