IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls tennis team swept the singles and doubles matches in the Class 1A state tournament in Iowa City on Thursday.
Xavier’s Gabi Fleming defeated Columbus Catholic’s Kate Holton, 6-1, 6-1 for the Class 1A state singles title. Fleming becomes the ninth player in state history to win three state singles championships.
“I think it takes a lot. My parents were both great players, I’ve been playing since i was about 8 years old,” Fleming said. “It’s just super amazing to be in the same category as those amazing players.”
“You can’t rattle her. We try at practice. We try to do stuff, try to say stuff, you just can’t,” Xavier girls tennis head coach Matt Foxhoven said.
