A police officer has been suspended from duty after he allegedly uploaded child sex abuse material to social media.

The 26-year-old constable at Sydney's inner city command was arrested on October 2 following a joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the NSW Police.

"Investigations began after an online user uploaded child abuse material to a social media platform. Police allegedly linked the man, 26, to the illegal activity," the AFP said.

Police will allege in court that the constable possessed and shared child abuse material online.

His electronic devices were seized by investigators after a search warrant was executed at a Clemton Park home.
