JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Eastern Carolina is beginning to feel the impact of the government shutdown, where those on base are seeing it firsthand.
Camp Lejeune has more than 38,000 active duty personnel and 3300 civilian workers, according to Military OneSource.
Now, 65% of those employees are furloughed due to the shutdown, according to the American Federation of Government Employees Union.
“So, when you take away everything but 35% of federal workers and active troops currently working, our restaurants, our stores, the things that we go out and buy, we’re not doing that. We’re not getting a paycheck, and we’re scared about our own groceries, so nobody is going to be spending money,” Local 2065 AFGE President Kelly Keating said.
