Diamonds to Korean War Veteran Donald Williams, and to Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown for honoring the 92-year-old with a key to the city. It may pale in comparison to the Purple Heart and Silver Star Williams earned, but showing gratitude to veterans does not have an expiration date. Wounded in 1952 when gunfire hit the vehicle he was in, Williams refused to leave his post until he’d fully treated fellow soldiers and assured they were evacuated to safety. Williams also showed his commitment to the uniform closer to home, when he guarded the bodies of 33 soldiers from the Wilkes-Barre-based 109th Field Artillery returned to the Kingston Armory following a tragic train wreck in 1950.
