VIDOR, Texas — Phillip Maldonado, an assistant band director at Vidor ISD who spent years shaping music programs across Southeast Texas, died this week , leaving schools and former students mourning the beloved educator.

Maldonado returned from retirement this year to serve as assistant band director at Vidor ISD. He previously spent seven years at Orangefield ISD as an assistant director before becoming head director.

Dr. Shaun McAlpin, superintendent of Orangefield ISD, said Maldonado made a lasting impact during his tenure at the district.

"He left a big impression on, the students, staff and faculty," McAlpin said.

McAlpin described Maldonado as someone who balanced humor with professionalism while leading the program through challenging moments.
