Colleges are too often the forgotten part of Scotland’s education system. ‌

But they provide a vital stepping stone for countless Scots who very often go on to achieve great success in their working lives. It’s been an extremely difficult decade for the further education sector. ‌

Fewer people, especially older Scots, are now applying to colleges . And figures out this week show the institutions have faced a 20 per cent real terms funding cut since 2021. ‌

So Anas Sarwar was right to raise the future of colleges at First Minister’s Questions yesterday. He accused John Swinney’s government of being “snooty” about colleges – favouring universities instead.
