The San Francisco 49ers had every reason and excuse to lose Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Rams . They were playing on a short week on the road, against a Super Bowl contender and were doing so with a badly depleted lineup that was without several top starters, including quarterback Brock Purdy and some of their biggest pass-catching targets.
Forget just losing, they had every reason to get blown out and entered the game as eight point underdogs.
Not only did they not get blown out, not only did they cover that spread, they actually won the game outright with a 26-23 overtime victory to improve to 4-1 on the season and take over sole possession of first place in the NFC West.
