Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge her husband's arrest under the National Security Act (NSA). She filed a habeas corpus petition on October 2, seeking his immediate release and claiming that his detention is illegal and violates established procedures. Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 after violent protests in Ladakh on September 24, which resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries.
Angmo stated that she has been unable to contact her husband since his arrest and has not received a copy of the detention order, which she described as a breach of protocol. "I have sought relief from the Supreme Court of India through a HABEAS CORPUS petition against Wangchuk's detention. It is one week today. Still I have no information about Sonam Wangchuk's health, the condition he is in nor the grounds of detention," she said in a social media post.
Authorities have accused Wangchuk of inciting protests and allegedly having links with a Pakistan intelligence officer. Angmo has expressed her concerns over her husband's wellbeing and has written letters to several officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting intervention for his release.
The Supreme Court is currently on vacation for the Dussehra break and is expected to reopen on Monday, when Angmo plans to mention her case. Meanwhile, the situation in Ladakh remains tense, with ongoing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. A total of 44 individuals have been arrested in connection with the protests, which have led to heightened security measures in the region.
