Veteran AFL midfielder Jack Steele has stood down as St Kilda captain.

It marks a sad end to his reign as skipper with the pride-shattering call coming with a suggestion from the club that he look at playing options with a rival next year.

St Kilda are attempting to make a bold move up the ladder in 2026 and Steele is part of the fallout as the club brings in other high-profile stars .

After he was called into the club on Friday, he told officials he wanted to remain but would have a look at other opportunities.

Channel 7 chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary said that Steele was now a “big name to watch in the next fortnight”.

Respected defender Cal Wilkie is favourite to captain St Kilda next year.
