HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Hattiesburg city leaders and police officers stood united in purple on Thursday, sending a message of support for survivors during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker said the month serves as a reminder that domestic violence impacts communities everywhere.
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month brings critical attention to the reality that domestic violence is widespread and touches lives in every community, including our own,” Barker said. “Across the country, we see 1,300 people lose their life every year to domestic violence.
“That’s more than three a day.”
October is dedicated to honoring survivors, supporting victims, holding offenders accountable and raising awareness.
