Film.Ca Cinemas in Oakville, Ontario, has suspended all screenings of Indian and South Asian films, including popular titles like Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 and Pawan Kalyan’s OG. This decision follows a recent shooting and attempted arson at the theatre, which occurred overnight when the venue was closed, resulting in no injuries.
The incidents, which took place last week, involved two suspects who used a flammable liquid to ignite the theatre's entrance doors. Fortunately, the fire was contained and did not cause significant damage. Halton Police are investigating the matter and believe the attacks may be linked to disputes within the South Asian film industry.
In a statement, Jeff Knoll, CEO of Film.Ca Cinemas, expressed regret over the cancellation, acknowledging that many patrons were looking forward to these films. He emphasized the theatre's commitment to safety for both staff and guests.
Another cinema chain, York Cinemas, has also announced a halt to screenings of Indian films, citing safety concerns. They stated that advance ticket purchases would be refunded.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand condemned the violence, calling it a serious and unacceptable act. She expressed solidarity with the community and the cinema's management, urging a swift investigation by the police.
This situation reflects a troubling trend, as similar incidents involving violence at theatres have been reported in the Greater Toronto Area and British Columbia. Some distributors of South Indian films have raised concerns about a possible campaign to limit the presence of popular movies in Canadian cinemas, suggesting a motive to control the market and protect profits.
