The Tamil Nadu government told the Madurai bench of the Madras high Court that the police will not grant permission to any political party for public gatherings until new standard operating procedures (SOPs) are formulated. The announcement follows directions from the Madras High Court (HC) for the state to draft guidelines for such events.

The Additional Advocate General (AAG) at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court stated that no political gatherings will be permitted until the SOPs are in place. This came as the bench disposed of several public interest litigation (PIL) petitions which had insisted upon the formulation of SOPs for public meetings.
