A week after clashes erupted in Bareilly over the “I Love Muhammad” posters, authorities have suspended internet services in the district for another 48 hours, citing intelligence inputs of possible unrest after Friday prayers.
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, general secretary of the All India Tanzeem Ulama-e-Islam, also appealed to people to maintain peace.
Internet services have been shut down since 3 pm Thursday and will be restored post 3 pm on Saturday. The order was issued by Home Secretary Gaurav Dayal from Lucknow .
Officials said inputs suggested that “unruly elements” may attempt to trigger fresh protests and could even “use women and children to disrupt the atmosphere”.
Earlier, the internet was suspended for 60 hours following the September 26 violence.
