Search efforts have been scaled back for a missing four-year-old boy after he disappeared from his family’s sheep station in the remote South Australian mid-north on Saturday afternoon, police say.

Assistant police commissioner Ian Parrott told a Friday afternoon press conference that the search for August Lamont, known as Gus, on the property near Yunta, about 300km north of Adelaide, had been scaled back.

Although those involved had been hoping for a “miracle”, the search had shifted to a recovery operation in the past 48 hours, Parrott said.

“At this point, no trace of Gus has been located. No tangible pieces of evidence, such as footprints, a hat or clothing, have been located to identify any direction of travel to assist searchers.
