Rahul Gandhi has once again stirred controversy abroad. Speaking at EIA University in Colombia, the Leader of Opposition claimed that India faces its greatest risk from an “attack on democracy.” He said India’s democratic system is under wholesale assault, preventing it from becoming a true world leader. Gandhi also alleged rampant corruption, accusing a few big businesses of controlling the economy with close ties to the Prime Minister. His comments drew sharp reactions back home. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut, and RSP leaders condemned him for “defaming India on foreign soil.” Congress, however, defended his statements. Gandhi’s remarks have reignited the heated debate over political criticism abroad.
