Dame Patricia Routledge has died at the age of 96. Routledge, who was best known for playing Hyacinth Bucket in the '90s sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, passed away on Friday morning. "We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love," her agent said in a statement. "Even at 96-years old, Dame Patricia's passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles. "She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world." Routledge played snobby housewife Hyacinth Bucket - who comically insisted her surname was pronounced "bouquet" - on Keeping Up Appearances between 1990 and 1995. For her famed role, she was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Best Light Entertainment Performance twice. The actress also played the title character Henrietta 'Hetty' Wainthropp in the TV series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates in the '90s and appeared on shows such as Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, Coronation Street and Steptoe and Son. In film, Routledge appeared alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 drama To Sir, With Love and Jerry Lewis in the 1968 comedy Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River. She was also a prolific stage actress, starring in shows on the West End and Broadway. She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1968 for Darling of the Day and an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Candide in 1988. Routledge was awarded a damehood for her services to theatre and charity in 2017.
