Claremont’s iconic nightclub Club Bay View has quietly closed its doors, ending decades in the spotlight, with the owner lamenting there are now too many rules to have fun.

Owner Jon Sainken said he decided to close the long-running venue, rather than figure out how to appeal to a new generation of nightclubbers.

The venue’s no-holds barred formula had worked for decades, propelling it to the centre of western suburbs nightlife.

Home to countless courtships, end-of-exam celebrations and fights between high profile sportsmen, the venue was a right of passage, a place where you might find the latest fashions — and a mate.

It saw some dark days too, when some of its patrons were killed by the Claremont serial killer.
