T.J.S. George, veteran journalist, biographer and columnist, who left an indelible mark on Indian English journalism through his incisive commentary and fearless independence, passed away on Friday (October 3, 2025) due to age-related complications. He was 97.
Mr. George is survived by his son, writer and poet Jeet Thayil, and daughter Sheba Thayil. His wife, Ammu George, predeceased him. The funeral will be on Sunday at Hebbal crematorium..
Born on May 7, 1928, in Kerala, Thayil Jacob Sony George began his career in journalism in the 1950s and went on to hold senior editorial positions in India and abroad. He was a founding editor of Asiaweek , Hong Kong, and later served as Editorial Adviser of The New Indian Express .
