An investigation in Lauderdale County is being launched after a bone found by a dog was confirmed to be human, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department announced Thursday.

According to LCSD, a caller contacted E-911 at approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to report that a dog had brought home what appeared to be a human bone. Investigators responded to the area near the intersection of Highway 11 & 80 and North Shore Drive.

On Thursday, Sheriff’s officials said that after consulting with Coroner Stella McMahan and experts at the state crime lab, the bone was confirmed to be of human origin.

The sheriff’s department is now coordinating with other agencies to begin a search of the area for any additional remains.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” the department said in a statement.
