Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones says a deadly shooting Wednesday unfolded near the intersection of Lakewood Drive and McDowell Road, beginning at a home that investigators have identified as the primary crime scene.

Officers first responded to what was reported as a traffic accident in the 2800 block of Lakewood Drive. When they arrived they found a person dead inside with a single gunshot wound to the head. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

According to Chief Jones, the deceased individual, described as a 19-year-old black male, allegedly approached a resident at a home at Lakewood and McDowell, was armed, and stole the resident’s truck. Police believe that an exchange of gunfire followed.
