GREENE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A retired Greenville police officer transporting Hurricane Helene supplies was killed this morning in a crash in Greene County.

The Highway Patrol says the single-vehicle accident happened around 7:45 a.m. on U.S. 13 south of Burnette Road, outside of Farmville.

Stuart Stevens, of Snow Hill, was heading north on U.S. 13 and lost control of his pickup truck that was pulling a trailer while trying to pass another vehicle, according to troopers.

The pickup truck ran off the road, hit a ditch, and overturned. The 60-year-old man died at the scene.

Troopers say Stevens was hauling relief supplies for Western North Carolina and was on his way to meet another retired officer in Greenville.

One lane of the highway was shut down for several hours due to the crash.
