A dad who killed his own son two-week-old son as he lay in the special care baby unit in hospital, by inflicting “catastrophic injuries” to the tot's head, neck, legs and jaw, has been jailed for life.

Little Brendon Staddon was found in his cot at on March 5 last year. During a trial Bristol Crown Court heard that 27-year-old Daniel Gunter inflicting the fatal injuries which left his son’s head “crushed”, before walking out of the hospital for a cigarette, leaving nurses desperately attempting to resuscitate the little boy.

Today, Mr Justice Swift jailed Gunter for life and told him he would serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars, after hearing Brendon’s injuries were “akin to a fall from a multi-storey building”.
