PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A bat captured earlier this week by Providence Animal Control has tested positive for rabies, according to the R.I. Department of Health.
The rabid bat was caught Wednesday afternoon in the area of Gladys Potter Park on Humboldt Avenue after the city received reports that it was acting erratically.
Health officials said there are no known exposures to the infected bat. Anyone who believes they may have come into contact with the bat should call the state's Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology at (401) 222-2577 during standard business hours or (401) 276-8046 after hours.
If a pet may have had direct contact with the bat, reach out to Providence Animal Control.
All dogs, cats and ferrets are required to be vaccinated against rabies under state law.
