Just a month after a Franklin County man was fatally attacked by a black bear, investigators say they suspect the recent death of a Springfield, Missouri, man who’d been camping in Newton County was also the result of a bear attack.
The victim — a 60-year-old man who was camping alone in the Ozark National Forest at the Sam’s Throne Recreation Area near Mt. Judea — was found dead Thursday by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sheriff Glenn Wheeler. The camper’s body was discovered after his family notified the sheriff’s office that they hadn’t heard from him in a couple of days.
