HAYS, Kan. (KWCH) - A crowd nearly filled at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum to pay their respects to a man who dedicated his career to serving and protecting his community.
Hays Police Sgt. Scott Heimann was killed in the line of duty early last Sunday, Sept. 29, while responding to a domestic violence disturbance. Sgt. Heimann was 32 years old. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
Inside Gross Memorial Coliseum Friday, the crowd was silent as the singing of “On Eagles’ Wings” coincided with Heimann’s casket being brought down the aisle, followed by officers, friends and family.
Heimann’s wife and two children sat at the front and the family held one another throughout the service.
