A grandmother, who was jailed and facing charges in connection with the death of her 13-year-old developmentally delayed granddaughter, died after being taken to a hospital Sept. 2, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

No foul play was suspected in Virginia Lujan's death, according to officials.

On Jan. 21, Tempe Police went to Lujan's house after she called 911 to report that her granddaughter, Melony Granados, wasn't breathing.

Officers inside the home saw that the girl was covered in bruises and sores, all in various stages of healing, Tempe police reported at the time. Lujan told investigators Melony had fallen down the stairs two days before, and she believed the girl would be fine.
