JAMES ISLAND, Sc. (WTVM) - Recently, a flag-raising ceremony was held to honor the raising of the first South Carolina Flag. That was 250 years ago, amidst the Revolutionary War.

“We got a lot to be proud of in South Carolina and our colonial history. So much of what happened here was instrumental to the foundation of the entire country,” President and Board Member of SC250 Charleston Brett Bennett said.

Back in September of 1775, the rebelling 2nd South Carolina regiment troops captured Fort Johnson from British forces who occupied the Lowcountry at the time.

“It was one of the first actual belligerent acts. This was definitely a step in the direction of we’re willing to fight for our independence,” CEO and Military Historian for the Battleground Preservation Trust Rick Wise said.
