October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one Hartselle nurse is making waves with a unique approach to raising awareness. Kelli Morton, the lead nurse for Hartselle City Schools, has introduced after-hours mammogram parties to ensure school staff can prioritize their health.

Morton was inspired to start these events following her mother's battle with cancer. "My mom was the definition of the matriarch. She was the strong one," Morton said.

Her mother, Susan, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2013. Despite entering remission after treatment, the cancer returned and spread to her bone marrow, leading to her passing in August 2019.

“Having to learn how to live without her had taken a while," Morton said.
