SHELBY — The Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country state finals a month away and the Mason County Central varsity cross country teams are rounding into form.

On Tuesday, the Spartans braved the heat and put on a strong showing in Shelby.

The Mason County Central girls finished in second place with 44 points in the 5,000-meter race. Hart was first with 19 points while Shelby took third with 85 points.

(The) girls were second and they all ran very well on a tough course,” Spartans head coach Ed Sanders said. “Very proud of their effort in the heat with the hilly and sandy course.”

Junior Maylan Sanders paced the Mason County Central girls, finishing in fourth place with a time of 22:11.12.

The Spartans had three other runners place in the top 15 – senior Nevaeh Battice
