Developers aren’t building much in Waterloo, but keep reaching for the sky in proposing tall towers to help the city move past a housing crisis.

City council will get its first look Monday at a new proposal for two adjacent towers: one at 37 storeys and one at 33 storeys. The towers would be about 300 metres from Waterloo Public Square in the downtown.

VanMar Developments proposes the towers to replace Erb and Good Funeral Home, which is relocating to Kitchener from its longtime home at 167-171 King St. S.

The towers would have 834 units: 596 with one bedroom and 238 with two bedrooms. It’s estimated just over 1,400 people could live in them.
