Mystic Aquarium is using 3D printing to help Charlotte, a green sea turtle with "bubble butt" syndrome, a condition often caused by boat strikes.
Claire Bolster, Charlotte’s handler, explained the injury: "Damage to the spine can lead to paralysis and air bubbles. Their rear ends are up — that’s where the name comes from. They have much less control to swim like a normal sea turtle."
Traditionally, rehabilitation facilities use epoxy weights on shells, but they require constant replacement. In 2019, Mystic Aquarium sought a better solution, teaming with 3D printing company Adia and footwear brand New Balance.
"They came in and asked if we’d help with a turtle," recalled New Balance designer Chris Wawrousek. "There was tons of excitement."
