A California man who admitted flying across the country with a gun and burglary tools to assassinate U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was sentenced Friday to just more than eight years in federal prison , far less than prosecutors sought.

Nicholas John Roske, 29, of Simi Valley, California, received a 97-month sentence and lifetime supervised release after pleading guilty to attempting to kill a justice . The Department of Justice had urged a sentence of 30 years to life, calling the punishment “woefully insufficient.”

Roske admitted that in June 2022, he flew from Los Angeles to Dulles International Airport, then traveled to Montgomery County, Maryland, armed with a firearm, ammunition, zip ties and burglary tools. His target, prosecutors have said, was Kavanaugh.
