A tree on Drake Street in Bayswater that is more than a century old will be removed to make way for a DevelopmentWA residential development.
The Norfolk Island pine tree is believed to have been planted around 1915 by then-property owner John Whittaker, a carpenter who worked at the Midland Railway Workshops and served on the Bayswater Road Board.
It is currently on the City of Bayswater’s local heritage survey, but this does not protect it from developers removing it.
The site is under DevelopmentWA’s control as part of its Metronet East project.
Georgina Ker, who is running for Bayswater’s West ward in the upcoming local government elections, said she believed the city’s heritage register was not “a very effective piece of policy”.
She said last year residents stopped unauthorised
