Jake Farrell’s football season had previously consisted of tiny bursts and quick plunges.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies’ backup quarterback — who played almost exclusively in third-and-short situations this season — started Saturday night for the first time in his collegiate career. When the clock wound down, he was a perfect 1-0.

“The guys around me prepared me for the moment,” Farrell said Saturday night after his Huskies — ranked fifth in the nation — beat the visiting Alberta Golden Bears 31-24 at Griffiths Stadium.

Saskatchewan starting quarterback Anton Amundrud did not dress Saturday. Head coach Scott Flory called it “a personal thing,” adding “you’ll see him back soon.”
