SEATTLE -- Detroit Tigers closer Will Vest had flawlessly dispatched the Seattle Mariners in the ninth and tenth innings on Saturday night. There was only one problem: The top of the Mariners’ order was coming up in the 11th, and the game still wasn’t over.

Vest had thrown only 19 pitches over two innings and would have gladly taken the ball again. But A.J. Hinch had other plans.

“Vest tried, and he wanted to badly,” Hinch said. “He was just working on so much adrenaline, but I didn’t even consider giving him a third. It matters so much to these guys. They’re willing to do anything. But we had a fresh Keider, who I have always talked highly about having good stuff and the mojo to get it done.”

That fresh arm belonged to young right-hander Keider Montero, who hadn’t pitched in eight days
