Montgomery police responded to a "mass casualty incident" early Sunday morning in the heart of downtown.
The incident happened near the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets. Police and other emergency workers were on the scene at about 1:30 a.m., and traffic was being diverted. Montgomery Police Department Lt. Tina McGriff said in a statement that people should avoid the scene.
Police had not confirmed the number of casualties, the nature of the event or whether there was an immediate danger to the public.
The incident happened on a busy night in the city's tourist district, hours after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College . The city debuted a Ferris wheel and other downtown attractions in conjunction with the game.
