Hundreds of people across the country traveled to the Scenic City this week to reflect on America's greatest heroes and the lessons they all learned while serving our great nation.

We sat down with some of these heroes and heard first-hand encounters about what it means to serve the United States and the real costs of freedom–it’s something all Medal of Honor recipients will never forget.

"Most of them received the medal not because they took an action that turned the tide of battle, but because they were willing to risk their own lives to save the lives of their comrades to fall on grenades or to run through a hail of gunfire,” says Dr. Robert Gates, former United States Secretary of Defense.
