It's becoming increasingly likely that a tropical wave west of Africa will form in the coming week, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Sunday afternoon.

Located several hundred miles south-southwest of Cabo Verde as of 1 p.m., the system was producing a large area of showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters expect the system to move through environmental conditions conducive to development, fueling the formation of a tropical depression or storm later this week.

As of Sunday afternoon, the system had a 50% chance of forming in the next two days and 70% chance in the next week.

The wave is expected to head toward the northern Lesser Antilles and is not likely to make the long trek to the Gulf Coast, according to meteorologist Zack Fradella.
